Fiscal cliff beware! There are people with cool heads who have a plan…with specifics even. Of course we are still in the “waiting” season and the other side is still working on specifics beyond “closing loopholes” (whatever those are) and other “stuff.” Looks like arguments and a lot of hot air with have to float around until the very last possible moment. Meanwhile back at the ranch a whole bunch of good people are going to lose their unemployment insurance and taxes on the middle class (and the wealthy) will go up automatically. Not good. Raising tax on the wealthy will not kill jobs. Raising taxes on corporations will not kill jobs. If you know our history, we had a robust economy during the Clinton years with higher taxes and…we can do this.
Fun fact for the day – On this day in 1832 Fr. Charles Constantine Pise was elected chaplain of the United States Senate – the first Catholic priest to hold that office.
Fr. Pise was born in Annapolis, Maryland in 1801 and was educated by the Jesuits first at Georgetown and later in Rome. After his education and ordination he returned to Washington, D.C. he became friends with the future President Tyler and Senator Henry Clay, who nominated him to become chaplain of the US Senate in 1832 a post he held for a year. He also wrote a famous poem “The American Flag” in response to the Know-Nothing Party’s claims that a Catholic could not be a good American. Of course this is the same party (founded in 1845) that started opposing waves of immigrants (particularly Catholics) coming to America. Fr. Pise died in May of 1866.
The reading for to day comes from Matthew (Mt.18:12-14)
If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray,
will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills
and go in search of the stray?
And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it
than over the ninety-nine that did not stray.
This is a famous story about the “lost sheep” and I’m sure some of you have felt lost. I sure have. But even in these uncertain times don’t get lost, physically or worse, in your head. There is always a way. Sometimes the truth is right in front of us but we so busted up we can’t see it. Something has happened to the grand old party over the years and it has become unrecognizable in its present form. Unfortunately it has become a racket masquerading as a movement. It ain’t a movement anymore, but you already knew that. Dick Morris and Karl Rove are lost sheep and instead of turning off Fox News, Fox News turned them off. But they’ll be back…
and so it goes…
