Voter Suppression and the GOP – an open letter

To the Republican governors and Republican state houses: Why do you hate America so much?

I looked up “democracy” and found this definition,”…government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.”  Now I’m wondering why you are trying to block the “free electoral system” with your voter ID laws and

or should

random and sometimes arbitrary purges and early voting in Republican-leaning counties and not in Democratic-leaning counties in your states? How can this be “free”? With your hurried statutes flying through your state houses and pounced upon by your governors, how does this honor the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and indeed any “free” exercise of our rights as citizens? This is oligarchy plain and simple. The ability to vote for representation should be made easier, not harder yet you have done the latter. Why is that? Are you afraid to lose? Are you afraid you will be voted out of office in a free election? Are you so scared of the electorate that you must create onerous laws to prevent everyone easily sharing this right? You talk about “less is more” when it comes to government spending. You shout austerity with the tax payers money, less regulation, less oversight and the like. Are your laws drafted to create less votes and therefore more republican “wins?” Less is more? Is that it?

And Ohio, what’s with the lack of early voting in all your counties? Where’s the equality in that? You know the 2004 elections in your state were an exercise in madness with long lines for few voting machines. You addressed that problem with early voting and the 2008 elections went well with very few complaints from voters. The only complaint I can see is that a democrat was elected to the Presidency. Is that what you are worried about Ohio? A re-elected Obama? Is that why you want to go back to the pre-2008 situation? Because it benefits the Republican voter and ticket?

Why do you hate America so? Afraid of fraud you say? What fraud? Show me the awful numbers of voter fraud and we’ll have ourselves a conversation. If not then I can only surmise that the fraud threat is made up and perpetuated on the ignorant by outlets like Fox. Voter suppression is what made the USSR great. Denial of a voice in government is what makes China great. I don’t think voter suppression will make Ohio or Illinois or Wisconsin or the other states floating these ID laws, great in the usual sense of the word. We know who the suppressors are, you, and the suppressed are large groups of voters (the young, the old, the black, the brown) in other words those who usually vote democratic.

So I ask you again Republican governors and state houses, Why do you hate America so much?

Sincerely,

The hope and changey guy.

and so it goes…
