First apologies ahead of time if you are (1) stuck watching Fox (I can’t bring myself to say “news” in the same sentence) or (2) you live for far right wing conspiracies. If you fit into any one of these categories or find yourself symptomatic of both then you should stop reading here and return to Fox Nation dot com.
The last time around the election cycle brought us a real alternative to 4 years of authoritarian rule. I was pleasantly surprised to find Dick Cheney saying that the choice of Sarah Palin as a vp candidate during that cycle was a mistake. He actually said that. We, who go outside every once in a while to breathe knew that from the get-go. As time went one we saw a candidate who was not ready for prime time, but an intellectually lazy person who didn’t know there were two Korea’s. Be that as it may, people still listen to her when she speaks. Initally I liked the novelty of her folksy-ness and her simple approach to the English language, but as time wore on I realized that there was nothing, well, there. She would have been a heartbeat away from the oval office behind an elder statesman. It was just too much of a risk. Later, when she resigned as governor of Alaska after 2 years it was evident that she didn’t understand that being president (or vice-president) would have been a four year commitment for her.
So that was then, and this is now. The race is on. The birthers and the myopic tea-party is pulling out all the stops. Much has been said (actually too much) about whether Obama is an American or if he is a pretender to the throne of office or whether he is secretly a Muslim or leading America down the road toward socialism or that Obama is trying to ruin the economy. These would be laughable if there weren’t so many people out there who believe the stories. Have you ever tried to talk to people who actually believe this tripe? I have. It’s like trying to convince Westboro Baptist church goers that Jesus was about love not damnation. So what do you do. You call them out when you can and leave it at that. Because it will be frustrating if you go any further. Sometimes people cannot see beyond their own misguided prejudices.
Into this mix we have as an alternative to Obama, Mitt Romney. His “lying for the Lord” approach to politics is staggering. I can take the Tea-partiers because they are mis-informed and factually challenged. I get it. But Romney just lies about stuff. He lies about stuff all the time. This type of mendacity cannot be elevated to higher office. It is just wrong. I know, I know, you say “Politicians lie” I know that. But all the time? When their lies can be fact-checked? This, to me is a character flaw, a big one. This goes way beyond simple and ignorant misspeak in London and Jerusalem. We all say stupid things at the wrong time. But outright lying? Lying is a prostitution of the mind. Lying often enough becomes one’s personality to a point that truth is no longer recognizable.
The latest lies that can be easily fact checked:
(Talking with Sean Hannity) Obama went on “an apology tour” in his first year.
Sorry Mitt that’s a lie (and he should know by now)
At a campaign event in Janesville, Wisconsin, Romney argued, “[T]he path we’re on, spending $1 trillion more every year than we take in, is leading us to Greece.”
Oops Mitt…not quite
Romney said Obama has blamed “the ATM machines” for the slow recovery. (This is so not true and actually a pretty dumb remark for a smart guy like Romney)
In a campaign ad, Romney claims, in reference to the federal loan guarantee Solyndra received, “The inspector general said contracts were steered to friends and family.”
This is such a lie.
Romney also argued, “Today, government at all levels consumes 37 percent of the total economy or G.D.P. If Obamacare is allowed to stand, government will reach half of the American economy.” mmmm….not quite
And the list goes on as the days go on. Only a little less than a hundred days to go before the election. I am just wondering what other whoppers will dribble out of that smirk. Well there’s always Israel and Poland. I don’t know about you, but a guy may be inept in foreign affairs (jeeze we had 8 years of Bush) but bald face lying? Not so much.
and so it goes…
