Geraldo, really? I mean I know what you meant, but does what you say even mean it’s right? Really? Don’t blame the gun or the person holding it. No, blame the bullet. According to Rivera, Treyvon was complicit in his own death because he wore a hood? Really? So the woman who is raped in a bar room because she wore a short skirt was “asking for it?” Really? Is there something about being too ethnic or too not-white? OK, so what did Geraldo actually say? Speaking on Friday’s “Fox and Friends,” Rivera said, “I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was.”
I don’t know immediately what to say to that except what I have written above. He called it “common sense” for a black person not to wear a hood. Do you get it? In his defense (what, I am defending Geraldo now? or Fox and Friends or or or even Fox???) anyway in his defense he also said that if Zimmerman was guilty he should be prosecuted. Well done Geraldo, that makes it all better! He reasoned that 7/11’s are held up by people wearing hoodies so don’t let your kids wear them, apparently because they will be killed by neighborhood watch guys. “But I am urging the parents of black and Latino youngsters particularly to not let their children go out wearing hoodies,” he instructed. (Wow buy stocks in ties, now!)
The reading for today comes from the Book of Wisdom and seems to apply to the un-wisdom-y remarks of Rivera this morning:
“The wicked said among themselves,
thinking not aright:
“Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us;
he sets himself against our doings,
Reproaches us for transgressions of the law
and charges us with violations of our training.”(Wisdom 2)
When something this tragic happens in our world we desperately try to find answers, not so much to justify but to understand more fully what exactly went down. The soldier in Afghanistan who killed women and children apparently for no reason was drunk one report says. OK, I understand he was drunk and he saw his buddies die in Iraq and so on and so on, but that does nothing to justify the killing of innocents. Had he been not drinking maybe he wouldn’t have killed those families. Had Treyvon not worn a hoodie, he may still be alive today, we will never know. But the booze was not at fault and the hoodie was not at fault, Geraldo. What was at fault were the choices that the soldier made and Zimmerman made at the time. Both held the argument with deadly force in their hands.
Like the writer of Wisdom says “let us beset the just one because he is obnoxious to us.” Clothing purchased at WalMart or Target should never be the excuse for killing. I should have known that the guy who brought us the empty safe of Al Capone, has now brought us an empty head.
and so it goes…
