Great day. Sunny in Dublin I hear and about half a million people in the streets for any excuse for a party. The Brits beat the Irish in Rugby today, kind of a downer. Just adds another thing onto the 800 years of oppression by the English. Yes, it’s true, the English never remember, the Irish never forget. Be that as it may, David Cameron was at the White House this week for a sleep over. From the news reports it sounded like a love fest.
Speaking of love feasts, yes this is the middle of lent and yes normal people are still wearing sack cloth and hair shirts, but this day is not Lent. This is what I was taught from my earliest days of doing hard penance during these 40 days. No, give-ups were suspended for St. Patrick’s Day (and for St. Joseph’s day 2 days from now). So if you are a worker or are Irish (or want to be), today is the day to let down your hair ( pun intended), wear green and join the hoopla. Thank God tomorrow is Sunday. Here is a little video I did long ago about Patrick and the snakes…
Enjoy the day, evening, nite, whatever… then back to the drab purple of the season. Here are some sage toasts:
May you live to be a hundred years,
With one extra year to repent.
When anyone asks me about the Irish character, I say look at the trees. Maimed, stark and misshapen, but ferociously tenacious.
May you live all the days of your life.
May you die in bed at ninety-five years, shot by a jealous husband (or wife).
and so it goes…
