“A Kinder, gentler nation…”GHW Bush
“…to build a more just and generous nation…”GWBush
“Hopefully, more and more people will begin to feel their story is somehow part of this larger story of how we’re going to reshape America in a way that is less mean-spirited and more generous,” B. Obama
The hysteria surrounding Obama’s quote has really taken off this week, as if it is the smoking gun for the agenda of the Kenyan-Muslim-Socialist-Black President. As if they have evidence that he wants a socialist nation. Back in 1990, he was talking about racism and equality. George Herbert Walker Bush back in 1990 was talking about the same thing. He was followed by his son George W. Bush (remember him?) who was talking about welfare reform.
The negative reaction from the righties is desperate desperation. Don’t we all want “to get a long” in this country? But no. The new Republican Party has changed so much since the days of Reagan-Bush that it is almost unrecognizable…dare I say even foreign. With the story of Goldman-Sachs, Afghanistan and whatever Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney and Republican state legislatures are saying and doing these days, I provide this snippet from today’s reading on this Friday, the third week in Lent. It is a quote from the Book of Mark (my favorite gospel writer). It is short and to the point:
“The second is this:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
There is no other commandment greater than these.”(Mark 12)
Kinder, gentler, help your neighbor, care for those who need care and push ever forwards in love.
and so it goes…
