Today’s timely quote is from Ezra and says:
“And if the virtuous man turns from the path of virtue to do evil,
the same kind of abominable things that the wicked man does,
can he do this and still live?
None of his virtuous deeds shall be remembered,”(Ez 18)
I didn’t write this, Ezra did a few semesters ago but as I read I am thinking (albeit briefly) about the self-anointed prophet of the right, Rush Limbaugh. Free speech, free smeech, his comments are still disgusting and so antithetical to the goodness that most Americans subscribe to. Why is this person still on the air? Because some people actually believe in what he says and he has a huge following. They are the “ditto-heads” he talks to when those rare occasions arise that he actually takes a call.
Nary a Republican would object to most of what he says. They are too afraid to do so. But there is hope, John Boehner (when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking) actually condemned (well sorta kinda) what Limbaugh said on his “show” yesterday about video taping women who get free contraceptives and posting the videos on the web so he could watch them. Mitt Romney responded by saying “It’s not the language I wouldn’t have used.” Duh! Well what can you expect from a guy who really doesn’t know what he’s for or against. I don’t know why these Republicans are so afraid to contradict the dick. Slime is one thing, slime-ball is another and Rush falls into the second category. Today, of course he says “(the statement was)…absurdity by being absurd,” imploring his critics to “lighten up.” Lighten up? When his listeners think he is the oracle? Have you ever seen a silly oracle? Not.
I thought it was very cool of President Obama to phone Sandra Fluke to give her support. It was gutsy and showed the compassion and care that we need to show one another. How does one get Rush to shut up? Call his sponsors it works. So far Sleep Train and Sleep Number have pulled their ads. I don’t think one can escape the irony of these two sponsors, but that’s another story for another time. With an estimated 20 million listeners per week, pulling ads can have an impact. It worked for Glenn Beck’s Fox show. After a while he was only left hawking “gold” for the coming Armageddon. He was fired from Fox and now hosts a web show. Of course the insecure Limbaugh also reacted to President Obama’s call to Fluke. Obama told Fluke that her parents should be “proud” of her. Limbaugh had a different message for them. “I’d be embarrassed,” he said. “I’d disconnect the phone. I’d go into hiding.”
We can only wish and hope, can’t we?
and so it goes…
