Advent Calendar – Day 19

snow

Today is December 15,2011 –And one of the readings for today comes from Luke:
“What then did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. “(Lu. 7:25) Did you read recently of CEO’s record bonuses? American CEOs saw pay increases of between 27 and 40 percent last year, according to a GovernanceMetrics International survey cited by the Guardian. In addition, the median value of CEOs profits on stock options jumped to $1.3 million from $950,400. That’s pretty good for providing shareholders with super-great returns. That’s their primary job anyway. The fiefdom that is the board room is a far cry from the peasants who scratch out a living doing real work. These corporate board rooms are the new “kings’ courts” of the 21st century. While republicans decry the de-moralization of American values, the real obscenity exists in these board rooms. Capitalism has changed over the last 30 years or so from providing incentive to ordinary Americans to becoming unattainable to these very same Americans. Capitalism has become the who you know and how do we get around those pesky regulations legally. That’s the key, “legal”. And still legal it is. The Right has been blocking every effort to balance the scales and to restore the opportunity of American Dream for our hard working people. Since the shameful Citizen’s United ruling from the corporate Supreme Court, money has flowed like a spring flood into the pockets of our elected representatives. They no longer hear nor do they care about who elected them.

A few days ago, Steven Van Zandt outline what he thought was the major issue in the country. In his piece “There Is Only One Issue In America”  he focuses on the obscene amount of money flowing from the so-called ” job-creators” into the so-called “law-maker’s” coffers. His simple solution “The elimination of all private finance in the electoral process.” How easy is that? Well, easier said than actually done I’m afraid. But if you want to know why people are not happy and frustrated and angry, look to our so-called “democratic” process. Is there something wrong with this picture when it takes a billion dollars to elect an public official like the President? Bad news, bad moon and bad things arisin’. Step into the breach and organize…and yes…occupy!

Keep hope alive this season. Buy local and buy Ameican.

and so it goes…

A little song, a little dance, a little coffee down your pants... 40 years in the high school classroom and now on my own. A chance to think about stuff and how it affects everyone, not just me. Now residing in Oregon volunteering for a refugee organization.
