New moon, new beginnings

New Year? New Moon? Groundhog Day? Wow! If that isn’t enough to contend with already! Then there’s the looming sword hanging over this country’s head, unemployment. For those of you who made New Year’s resolutions and let them slide as we move into February, there’s a ‘reset’ button called the Lunar New Year, a thousands year-old celebration from our lien holders, the Chinese. Perhaps we can take solace in the fact that we can start over at various times during the year. One biggie resolution of course is putting Americans back to work. With nearly 15 million of our country-persons unemployed or under-employed it behooves us to solve this problem. If you listened to the Eddie Munster look-alike Paul Ryan’s response to Obama’s State of the Union, one would think that he is on the same page when it comes to the government’s responsibility to “to help provide a safety net for those who cannot provide for themselves.” (The other response to the SOTU by that person-who’s-name-shall-not-be-mentioned this month is not considered here because we are still trying to translate it into English). Ryan has an handle on how government needs to help those on the margins or beyond the margin. This is good. But looking at the programs he wants to defund and demolish these are the very programs that catch the most vulnerable. So is this just talk? Is he serious?

We need to sacrifice for our fellow citizens not just with charity, which is easy, but with justice because it is difficult. This is the year of the rabbit, Punxsutawney Phil didn’t see his shadow today meaning Spring is right around the corner and the new moon in the night sky is waiting to show it’s light. It’s time to dive in and strengthen those who need our strength, the poor amongst us. Cut your coat in two and give half to the stranger. Our country is only as strong as it’s weakest citizens. If they are not helped then bombs and soldiers and big bank accounts don’t really matter in the big picture.

and so it goes…
