Pine Ridge, South Dakota via Iowa and Nebraska

The Old School room
I am knackered. Plain and simple truth, I haven’t interviewed anyone officially since New York and now I’m at Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge, South Dakota! In spite of being knackered as all get out, I am very happy to be here at the Jesuit Community. All of them are so warm and welcoming. I am looking forward to tomorrow when I can interview some folks for the grand video. My friend from school, Tom is here making his retreat and attending board meetings. We took a ride this evening around the reservation visiting some of the outlying missions. We also visited the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890 leaving nearly 300 Lakota dead. I put both my hands on the mass grave at the site. I don’t know why, but I felt I just had to do it. At the gravesite a woman and her three kids came up to sell us beads. As happens with situations such as these we carried on a conversation with the woman at what her future may be. Seems as if she is part of another tribe in Arizona and was thinking that maybe things would be better there and was going to move there. Tom bought a necklace from her and we parted. Little moments in a day make it.

and so it goes…

A little song, a little dance, a little coffee down your pants... 40 years in the high school classroom and now on my own. A chance to think about stuff and how it affects everyone, not just me. Now residing in Oregon volunteering for a refugee organization.
